After eating breakfast, travel for 45 minutes via the park communities to the Londorossi entrance. These elevations at the low ends tend to be slick, so you need to be in good shape.
Day 3: Mti Mkubwa – Shira camp (2785m- 3504m)
Climbing distance: 4-6 hours.
After a sound night’s sleep and a filling breakfast, we leave the rain forest and continue on an upward path. The trail climbs steadily with expansive vistas to reach the rim of the Shira Plateau. The temperature starts to fall. Dinner and overnight at Shira camp.
Day 4: Shira 1 camp – Shira hut (3504m- 3895m)
Climbing distance: 5- 7 hours.
Get up and get ready for a leisurely stroll to see the Shira plains and the glaciated peaks of Kibo to the west. You will reach a plateau from which you can ascend to Moir hut passing by Shira hut/ Shira camp 2. Lent Hills offers a wide range of treks, making this a fantastic chance to acclimate.
Day 5: Shira hut – Barranco camp (3895m – 3986m)
Climbing distance: 4- 6 hours.
Get up early and get ready for an acclimatization day. After leaving the Shira Plateau, we head East along a ridge, passing the turnoff for the Kibo summit, before heading South-East toward the lava tower which is 4650m/15,250ft. We reach a second intersection, which goes to the Arrow Glacier, not far from the tower. We then keep down to Barranco Camp for the night.
Day 6: Barranco camp – Karanga camp (3986m – 4034m)
Climbing distance: 4- 5 hours.
You will climb Barranco, the steepest section of the entire trek, immediately after breakfast. At this point, safety is crucial, so follow your guides’ instructions to ensure your safety as you go to the summit. There aren’t any alpine climbing sequences, but you might need to use your hands periodically to get a firmer grip. After ascending to the top, you can wander along the mountain crest and, if the sky is clear, take in a breathtaking view of Kibo’s southern glacier and peak. For your overnight stay, you will get to Karanga Camp.
Day 7: Karanga camp – Barafu camp (4034m – 4662m)
Climbing distance: 4- 5 hours.
After breakfast, start the three to four-hour ascent to Barafu camp. You will be fascinated by the afro-alpine dessert that will fill the landscape today. Once you arrive at the camp, you will enjoy a hearty early dinner before settling in for a restful night’s sleep in anticipation of tomorrow’s thrilling climb.
Day 8: Barafu camp – Uhuru – Mweka camp (4662m – 5895m – 3106m)
Walking time: 5 -6 hours.
After a morning grab in the wee hours, start your five- to seven-hour ascent to the mountain crater rim at Stella. If everything goes as planned, we will be able to see the sunrise there and take beautiful pictures. You can take a brief break if needed and then hike for another one to two hours to reach the trip’s high point, the 5895-meter Uhuru Peak. Standing at the top of Africa and watching the sunrise illuminate the summits and surroundings is truly a once in a lifetime experience.
After taking some much-needed photos, you will return to Barafu Camp and rest for a couple of hours. Once everyone has had enough sleep, you will continue the approximately three-hour walk down to Mweka gate (3080 m). You can unwind the remainder of the evening, enjoy a delicious meal, and get a restful night’s sleep.
